Long-term digital preservation of sensitive human rights documentation.
Preservation, Human Rights, Archiving
Designed and validated a preservation workflow for human rights archives: balancing accessibility with encryption, redundancy, and sustainable stewardship.
The Challenge
Human rights archives need to be preserved for decades, but technology changes quickly. The challenge was to design a preservation workflow that balanced security, redundancy, and accessibility.
Process & Research
Interviewed archivists and engineers to understand their concerns: encryption, geographic redundancy, and long-term stewardship. I mapped out scenarios of risk and access.
Testing & Iteration
Explored different flows for uploading, encrypting, and replicating sensitive collections. Testing revealed that archivists valued clarity and reassurance over speed alone.
The Solution & Impact
Designed a preservation dashboard that made invisible processes visible. Users could see where their archives were stored, how they were encrypted, and what health checks had passed. This transparency built confidence.
Learnings & Next Steps
Learned that preservation is as much about trust as it is about storage. Future steps include automating more integrity checks and designing recovery flows in case of crises.
